Colorado’s oil shales are found in the Eocene-age Green River Formation. The formation is widespread throughout western Colorado, southwestern Wyoming, and eastern Utah. The energy boom shale projects overwhelmed western Colorado in the wake of the 1973 Arab oil embargo, bringing thousands of workers along with housing and social problems. Unocal, aided by federal subsidies, finished building its plant when other companies were leaving in the early 1980s, but couldn’t make the project profitable. An in-place assessment of the oil shale and nahcolite resources of the Green River Formation in the Piceance Basin of western Colorado was competed in 2010. The Piceance Basin is one of three large structural and sedimentary basins that contain vast amounts of oil shale resources in the Green River Formation of Eocene age. Buried beneath the ground, in Colorado and Utah, are a trillion tons of oil shale. Throughout the 20th century, men have tried and tried again to unlock the energy contained in these rocks. To date, all efforts have failed. But every twenty or thirty years, when energy prices spike, a new attempt is mounted.
